Moscow can boast, like any other large and varied community, that it includes many of the same organizations and clubs that one might belong to if one were back in the US. There is a professional woman’s organization, a very large and active American Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, two international choirs, broom-ball and softball leagues, a running league (the Hash House Harriers) and numerous university alumnae associations. Various religious groups meet for worship and Bible study in English.
The American Women’s Organization of Moscow provides social, educational and cultural programs for women living in Moscow. Membership is extended to female citizens of all North American countries – Canada, the United States and Mexico – or those married to North Americans. Associate memberships are offered to other nationalities on a first-come, first-serve basis. The annual membership dues give members free or subsidized access to activities including twice monthly programs, a Newcomers Coffee, charitable events, seasonal parties, tours, special interest groups, and more. Interest groups include: visits to the children’s cancer hospital which AWO Moscow supports through the Nastenka Foundation; an Understanding Russia group, a book club, a lunch group, a Moms and Tots group, mahjong, Fun and Games, stitch and quilting groups, Nordic walking, Go Moscow group for exploring museums or points of interest, neighborhood walking tours, and more. There are several groups for couples, including: dining out, wine tasting, Saturday outings, a new activity called Orienteering, and others. A monthly newsletter is published for members. The International Women’s Club is open to women , and men, of the foreign community living in Moscow. Although English is the official language of the club there are members from over 70 different nationalities. The IWC holds general meetings at different Embassies each month from September to May. There are also coffee mornings held on a regular basis, open to all members. The club also organises other events to raise money for charities.
