Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations in Saint Petersburg
April 29 and May 1, 2017
Media report that demonstrations are planned in Saint Petersburg for April 29 and May 1 at the following locations and times:
On April 29 at approximately 2:00 p.m., the group “Open Russia” will march from the Gorkovskaya metro station just north of the Peter and Paul Fortress to a government building on the Petrovskaya embankment. Both of those locations are on the Petrogradskaya side of the Neva. The city government has not authorized this march.
On May 1, numerous opposition parties and nationalist movements will stage authorized annual May Day marches and demonstrations. According to sources, many of the groups will form between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in the vicinity of the Oktyabr’skiy concert hall, located just north of Ploshad’ Vosstaniya. The groups will then march to Ploshad’ Vosstaniya and continue along Nevskiy prospect. The final destinations of the marches vary: Dvortsovaya Ploshad’ (Palace Square), Isaakievskaya Ploshad’ (St. Isaac’s Square), Konyushannaya Ploshad’ (Konyushennaya Square), and Marsovo Pole (Field of Mars). The marches are expected to end sometime in the early afternoon.
The Consulate General reminds U.S. citizens to avoid public demonstrations and to remain aware of their surroundings and patterns on public transportation services that might indicate that protests are gathering.
