Anthony F. Godfrey is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Mr. Godfrey is responsible for managing key aspects of the U.S. – Russia relationship.
From 2015 – 2017, Mr. Godfrey Served as Embassy Moscow’s Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs, the principal policy advisor for the Ambassador. Before coming to Moscow, he served as the Director of the Office of Iraq Affairs in the Department of State’s Near East Affairs Bureau, where he worked to develop the international coalition to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). From 2012 – 2013, Mr. Godfrey served as the Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Before his service in Iraq, Mr. Godfrey served as Director for Turkish and Eurasian Energy Affairs at the National Security Staff of the White House. From 2008 – 2012, Mr. Godfrey served as Counselor for Political-Military Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. As part of his duties, Mr. Godfrey worked to develop the tri-lateral security dialogue with Turkey and Iraq.
From 2004 – 2007, Mr. Godfrey was assigned as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia. For the final year of his assignment there was no U.S. Ambassador present in Armenia, and Mr. Godfrey served as Chargé d’Affaires. Other overseas assignments include the U.S. Embassies in Zagreb, Dublin and Minsk as well as an assignment as Deputy Head of the OSCE Assistance Group in Chechnya. Mr. Godfrey also served in the Office of Russian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
Prior to joining the Department of State, Mr. Godfrey served for 12 years in the U.S. Navy. His last assignment was with the On-Site Inspection Agency, responsible for implementing arms control agreements between the U.S. and the USSR. In the private sector, Mr. Godfrey worked as commodities manager for an import-export firm doing business with the former Soviet Union.
Mr. Godfrey is married to the former Anne O’Toole, whom he met while posted in Dublin. They have three children, ages 25, 17 and 16.
