The U.S. Embassy in Moscow notes that today marks the opening of the trial of the five individuals accused of the February 27, 2015 assassination of former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Nizhny-Novgorod Oblast Governor Boris Nemtsov. The world has been watching how Russia reacts to the murder of a leading political opposition figure within sight of the Kremlin walls. We call on Russian authorities to fairly and justly try the defendants in this case and to ensure that all those responsible for this murder, especially those who ordered it, are brought to justice. We also join the daughter of Mr. Nemtsova, Zhanna Nemtsova, in urging Russian authorities to continue the investigation into other individuals suspected of playing a role in organizing and perpetrating this crime.
