Consul General Thomas Leary

Thomas Leary is the Consul General, St. Petersburg. This is his second St. Petersburg posting, having served as Public Affairs Officer there from 1999-2001. Following his first St. Petersburg assignment, he served as Press Attaché at the Embassy in Moscow from 2001-2004.

Prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Leary served as the Minister Counselor for Public Affairs in Islamabad from 2014-2015, Minister Counselor for Public Affairs in London from 2011-2014, and Minister Counselor for Public Affairs in Ankara from 2008-2011. He has also served in Copenhagen, Madrid, Lima, and Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Mr. Leary holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Assumption College and Master’s Degrees from Indiana University and Johns Hopkins University. He is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts.

Thomas Leary is married to former Foreign Service Officer Rachel Norniella and they have two children, Sarah and Tom. While in St. Petersburg from 1999-2001, Sarah and Tom studied at Herzen Pedagogical University’s International School.
