On February 5, in part in recognition of Black History Month, Information Resource Center Vladivostok held a screening of “The Help,” a glimpse into 1960s South and a story of a white woman capturing the stories of the African American domestic help from the maids’ perspective and publishing them in a book. The screening was followed by a discussion led by Public Affairs Officer Erik Pugner in which participants discussed the way the movie reveals aspects of racial injustice in daily lives and the local community, the necessity of individual courage in bringing about change in a resistant culture, and how racism and classism interfered with important personal relationships in the story, including between white children and the black women who raised them. This event was part of the monthly movie series held at IRC Vladivostok on the first Friday of each month.
