U. S. Department of Defense in Russia
The Prisoner of War/Missing in Action office is working to determine if there were or still are any American servicemen who were held against their will within the territory of the former Soviet Union. The office, officially known as the Joint Commission Support Directorate – Moscow – is actively pursuing POW/MIA information relating to World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam war, as well as aircraft shoot-downs that occurred during the Cold War. The office is also helping its Russian counterparts to account for their own missing in action from the Second World War, the war in Afghanistan, and various Cold War-era conflicts in which Soviet soldiers participated.
