Demonstration Alert: U.S. Mission Russia

January 31, 2021

Location: Russia

Event:  Media sources indicate that on Sunday, January 31, demonstrations are being planned throughout Russia in support of an opposition activist.  Please refer to U.S. Mission Russia’s January 29 Demonstration Alert for more details.  We have learned of an additional planned demonstration in St. Petersburg, where demonstrators plan to gather at the beginning of Nevsky Avenue.  Given the likely substantial police presence and possible dispersal and arrests of protestors, U.S. citizens should avoid these demonstrations and any demonstration-related activities.

In response to a planned demonstration in Moscow, the Russian government has introduced a restriction on movement through a substantial portion of the city.  The following Metro stations will be closed from 08:00 on January 31 until further notice:  Alexandrovsky Garden, Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Revolution Square, Kuznetsky Most, Lubyanka, and Kitay-Gorod.  A map of the prohibited areas of Moscow is available here.

There is the potential for related authorized and unauthorized demonstrations throughout the weekend, throughout Russia.  U.S. citizens should avoid these demonstrations and any demonstration-related activities.
